You couldn't ask for a better setting than the one snared by the Akumal Beach Resort. Firstly, it's right on the beach. A golden stretch dotted with parasols and hammocks, it's got the tropical paradise thing just right. Secondly, if you take a closer look you'll find you've got some pretty exotic neighbours. Cue turtles, parrot fish and rays in the sea and exotic birds on the beach.

And for that reason, activities here are endless. Paddle off in a kayak and track down a sandy bay. Or don a mask and snorkel and get to know the marine life. If you'd rather stay on dry land, there are things like beach volleyball and dance classes. Or you could always just devote your days to the pool, which comes complete with a whirlpool bath and a snack bar, too.

As for the hotel itself, with its sunny yellow paintwork and thatched balconies it puts you in the holiday frame of mind from the word 'go'. Step inside and you'll find bedrooms decorated in pale tones with cool tiled floors. Big beds are dressed in tropical bright bed linen and sliding doors lead out on to a private balcony or terrace. Satellite TVs and air-conditioning come as standard.

On the dining front, this place has got some great restaurants and bars. There are four eateries spanning everything from buffet meals to Mexican specialities. And in terms of drinks, make sure you check out the swing bar. Kitted out with swings hung beneath thatched roofs, it's a great place to head come the cocktail hour.
