Almerida Beach Hotel

You couldn't ask for a lovelier setting than the whitewashed Almeritha. It fronts a Golden Beach and looks out over turquoise seas to the island of Karga. And although it's in a peaceful spot, it's just a couple of minutes' walk to the village's shops, bars and restaurants.

There's plenty to keep you at the Almerida itself, though. Take the pool. Shaped like a giant skittle, it's bordered by a terrace dotted with sunbeds and parasols. There's a lawn planted with bushy palm trees for extra shade, too, and a bar serving drinks and snacks. The icing on the cake though is the views - you can look out to sea while you're taking a dip.

For serious relaxation, there's a sauna and whirlpool bath. Or for something with a little more pace, there's a bowling centre. You can also hire bikes at the hotel - the surrounding countryside makes superb cycling territory.

Inside the Almerida, you're greeted by an elegant lobby with fresh white walls, leather sofas and modern lighting. And you'll find the same sophisticated decor throughout the hotel. There's a romantic restaurant which serves Cretan specialities and has an extensive wine list. Plus there's an inviting piano bar with atmospheric touches like candles. And calming bedrooms come with extras like a chaise longue-style sofa, a selection of music and a balcony that makes the most of the views.
