Alianthos Apartments

An introduction to Alianthos Apartments

A true backwater, Tersanas comprises a small inlet headed by a gently shelving, shallow, sandy beach, with a minute quay for the little fishing boats, scarcely bigger than dinghies, that rock at anchor in the miniature harbour. Around the little bay a handful of private houses and holiday homes are scattered, whilst on the seaward end of the rocky spur protecting the tiny cove, a minute or two's walk up a narrow lane lined with olive trees, in a secluded position, are the Alianthos Villas.
Set amongst lush gardens, profuse with bougainvillaea, hibiscus, pines, tamarisk and fruit trees, the apartments are built on a slight slope and best use has been made of the terrain to provide a degree of privacy for each apartment.
The traditional style is carried through to the interior furnishings where, like the shutters outside, the wood has a dark, deep sheen. Colour co-ordinated soft furnishings add a dash of joviality. All the apartments have their own balcony or patio, virtually all with a sea view. Stone paving surrounds the polygonal pool and from this sunbathing area, well provided with sunbeds and parasols, are fantastic views over a vast expanse of sea, with distant towns all leading to the majestic White Mountains. A bar offering light snacks adjoins the pool, whilst a stroll down the steps to the front brings you to a little jetty built into the rocks, where there is generally a cooling breeze coming off the sea as well as the soothing sound of the waves brushing against the rocks. Swimming from here is delightful if you are sufficiently agile to clamber back. Just behind the jetty is a hard tennis court - where else could you play tennis with the sea by your elbow and with a wonderful view towards the island of Thodorou and the distant Rhodopou Peninsula?
For authentic Cretan cuisine, the village of Horafakia, under a kilometre away, has a few unashamedly down-to-earth tavernas, where the cooking's wholesome and amazing value. There are also plenty of other restaurants/tavernas locally to choose from. In Horafakia you will also find a supermarket, mini-market and petrol station. There is a small beach bar in Tersanas itself which serves lunch, snacks and dinner.
You will have plenty of exploring to do on the Akrotiri Peninsula. A short drive will bring you to a variety of child friendly sandy beaches. Also, close by you will find the beautiful Venetian monasteries of Agia Triada and Gouverneto, from where there's a splendid walk, past huge caves leading to a beautiful monastery ransacked by pirates. You could, if feeling strong, continue on to a secret cove where you can swim. In spring this area is a mass of wild flowers and a haven for migrating birds and thus a delight for the naturalist. But if you want a change from nature, Chania, with its shops, market, harbour restaurants, bars and fascinating mix of architecture, is only a 20 minute drive away.
